Established in 1919, Minosaka swords reflect the spirit of Japan and Budo. Located in the Mino prefecture, a famous centre of sword production and, throughout history, the home of several master swordsmiths, who built the region's reputation for swords of outstanding quality, sharpness, durability and practicality.
Founded by Sakai Mitsuo, Minosaka was created initially to support the increasing demand in weapons for the Japanese military. The sword industry as a whole had its peak as a result of the 1932 Manchurian invasion and the second Sino-Japanese war. In 1945, with new laws introduced following defeat in the second world war and the start of American occupation, all sword trading businesses were forced to close down.
Years later, in 1973, Japan entered the high economic growth period and general interest in sport and recreation was boosted. Kendo became one of the most popular hobbies in the country and traditional Japanese sports such as Iaido were re-invigorated, increasing the demands for equipment for practice. At this time the grandson of Sakai Mitsuo, Sakai Tetsushi, gathered swordsmiths who remained in Mino region after the war and established Minosaka, with an aim to produce high quality Iaito, ornamental swords and other traditional weapons.
Minosaka’s swords are all fully handmade by proud swordsmiths, using the perfect blend of traditional and modern techniques. Their experienced craftsmen take full control of each step of production to deliver the highest standard in every sword. The precise blade casting process ensures the utmost strength and durability for dedicated Iai practitioners to enjoy and rely upon. Various styles and colours are also available for accessories such as Tsuba, Tsuka Ito and Tsukamaki. Every single sword is made with the highest standard of craftmanship and spirit.
Since opening the business, Minosaka has been proudly producing high quality swords which reflect the spirit of Japanese Bushido and which honour and protect the proud Mino sword tradition which has been handed down from generation to generation.
